Career Advice - Why You Should Buy a Journal - Hallie Crawford
Career Advice - Why You Should Buy a Journal Identifying your dream job can be a very organic process that requires a lot of thought, self-reflection, and organization. Maintaining a journal helps track those thoughts so you can see them on paper objectively and revisit them when and if needed. Writing thoughts down also enables you to see themes in your thinking which, in turn, can help provide clarity for your career path. For example, if you keep writing about advising people on personal issues, perhaps you need to consider adding consultant or counselor to your list of career ideas. Finally, many of the action steps in this book ask you to make notes on various topics, and a journal is a great place to keep track of those. So buy a journal and make a commitment to use it. It can be an informal sort of thing or not, however works best for you. Scribbling, incomplete sentences, a kernel of an idea are all acceptable. So are complete sentences or outlines if that is your writing style. You are the only person who needs to see what you write. But by allowing your thoughts to flow onto the paper, I guarantee you will begin to see patterns emerge that you wouldnât have identified otherwise. You will think more clearly, clarify the qualities you want in a job, and identify the possible obstacles in your way. I once attended a workshop where the presenter helped attendees identify the barriers they might have concerning money. He prompted everyone to write the word âmoneyâ and then list every word, positive or negative, that came to mind as soon as they thought of money. The object was to understand their deep seated feelings about money and how those feelings might be helping or hindering them . It was like a brain dump, and a journal works the same way. When you write down the first thoughts that come to mind a round a particular topic, you start to see more clearly how you feel about that topic. You also become more aware of possible negative thoughts that hold you back. Journaling is a tool not only to provide clarity for you, but also to help you move forward in the process more effectively and efficiently. Action step: Buy a journal tonight. Make sure itâs hefty enough to include a few monthsâ worth of writing. Look for a cover design that appeals to you and decide if you want it lined or unlined . . . Make it fun! Hard Work Alone Wont Get You Promoted But This Will
Hard Work Alone Wont Get You Promoted But This Will Running Fairygodboss, I hear a lot of opinions about what women should do in buchung to be successful. Most of it is amazingly helpful and thoughtful. But sometimes, I hear things that are well-intentioned but worrisome (and potentially misleading) in their simplicity. The one piece of well-meaning advice that bothers me the most? Just work hard.I hear this advice everywhere from panels on leadership to articles about how to advance your career. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently gave an interview in which she said, My husband the venture capital investor Zachary Bogue runs a co-working office in San Francisco. He runs his company out of there and other startups cycle through. And if you go in on a Saturday afternoon, I can tell you which startups will succeed, without even knowing what they do. Being there on the weekend is a huge indicator of success, mostly because these companies just dont happen. They happen because of really ha rd work.Commitment and dedication are important to achieving goals and working hard is obviously a key success factor for many professionals. The herausforderung is focusing exclusively on hard work because while research shows that hard work is correlated with success, the jurys out on whether its sufficient. For example, theres an overwhelming amount of evidence that others assumptions and unconscious bias affect us in the workplace. And so does gender inequality Fairygodboss recently surveyed over 1,600 working women who reported that, where gender inequality exists at work, unequal promotions between men and women is the top issue. So if hard work isnt the answer, what is?Women are good at working hard. If that was really the answer, full stop, wouldnt there be more women in leadership, making equal pay? Working hard for your success means more than putting your head down and putting in a great deal of effort it also means taking control of your brand making aya that others know you are working hard and it means asking for the rewards.Case in point We may be unduly influenced by swagger (also known as self-promotion something research has shown men to do more without inhibition) and therefore under-value those who toil away earnestly but more quietly.Indeed, one study concluded that Of all the strategies used by women, making their achievements knownby ensuring their manager was aware of their accomplishments, seeking feedback and credit as appropriate, and asking for a promotion when they felt it was deservedwas the only one associated with compensation growth.Self-promotional behavior (including asking for what you want/have earned) matters. Yet research shows that women even the most senior ones still struggle with it. There are different theories about why there is a gender difference between men and women when when it comes to self-promotional behavior but the bottom line is this Dont buy into the career advice that its enough to work hard. Working hard is only one parte of the puzzle. If you want that promotion or raise, use your swagger and ask for itA version of this article was originally published on Forbes.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer

How to Face a Personal Career Crisis and Come Out Smiling
How to Face a Personal Career Crisis and Come Out Smiling Its hard to know when or if a midlife crisis will hit you. These days, research suggests that midlife crises are no longer confined to our forties they are happening in our thirtiesand even in our twenties, in the form of a quarterlife crisis. Typically, if you do face a midlife crisis, it willtake the form of a career-identity crisis. You may lose your sense of purpose in life and your sense of identity. Rather than just hating your manager or feeling bored atyour job, you may feel that your entire chosen career path is meaningless. The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to effectively manage your personal career crisis and come out the other side smiling. Hereare fourtips to help you do just that.1. Take Some Comfort in the Fact You Are Not AloneReports suggest that around half of workers may feelunfulfilled intheir c urrent jobs, so chances are thatplenty of kindred spirits exist around you in the office. These are people with whom you can share your pain and from whom you can seek advice. You can bounce ideas off ofthese people and clarify your thoughts. Some of these peoplemay have already gone through the same crisis, and others may be currently going through it, but all across the board theymay have some practical suggestions.2. See Your Crises as a Career Transition InsteadWe live in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, a time of boom and bust, a global environment in whichcompanies and political regimes rise and fall seeminglyovernight. This volatility is felt in thework world the traditional job-for-life has all but evaporated. Todays worker may have between 15 and 20 jobs over the course of their lifetime, according to certain predictions.Furthermore,a 2006 study from New York Universitys School of Continuing and Professional Studiesfoundthat todays professionals ar e expected to change careers three times in their lifetimes just 28 percent of present-day professionals expect to have lifelong careers.Becausecareer changes are so common and normal, it may serve little purpose to view your career shakeupas a crisis. Instead, take the more productive route and view it as a career transition opportunity.3. Go on aVision Quest (Metaphorically Speaking)A einbildung quest isa rite of passage practiced onNative American cultures. It is a meditative exercise in whichthe individual spends a fewdays and nights secluded in nature in order to do some deep thinking and find spiritual guidance and purpose. Now, this exact activity might not be everyones cup of tea, but the concept of taking time out of your normal life to open your mind up to newpossibilities is a sound one.Why sit around your office orapartment, moping and wallowing in self-pity, when you can go on a retreat, take a few days vacation somewhere, and let the answers find you? Youll be able to t hink outside of the box and consideryour career in a much more liberated way, freeing your mind and enabling you to come up with some solutions to your crisis.Dont rule out any options at this stage, however strange the may seem. The professional vision quest is a brainstorming exercise, so just enjoy the journey. Therell be plenty of time for realism soon.4. Come Back Down to Earth and Make a PlanOnce youve had time to brainstorm on your vision quest, its time to make a plan, which involves conductingyour own personal SWOT analysis.Lookat your strengths and weaknesses, your career opportunities and your career threats. Try tomatch your strengths and desires to viable alternative career options and opportunities. Understand what youll need to do in terms of training and thesort of title or status sacrifices you may need to make in order to be a credible candidate on your desired new career path. Also, identify the likely career transition period how long will it take you? Six mont hs? A year? Two years? After following these steps, you should have acareer transition strategy and a positive direction in which to enthusiastically channel all of yourprecious, nervous energy. It could and should be the start of a wonderful journey

5 Ways to Reach an Evasive Decision Maker
5 Ways to Reach an Evasive Decision Maker5 Ways to Reach an Evasive Decision MakerIdentifying the correct decision maker, getting by any gatekeepers, and actually reaching the part in charge rather than their voicemail can be an epic journey in and of itself. So when youve finally had what seems like a great chat with that decision maker, he says hell get back to you... and then you can never reach him again, its pretty frustrating. If a decision maker is ducking your calls it sometimes means he has no intention of buying from you. In those cases, theres no point in pursuing them further. But what about the decision maker who is interested, but assigns you a lower priority than all the other things hes coping with right now? Sometimes all you have to do to close the sale is get him to sit still long enough to listen. If that describes your current situation, try one of these tricks to get his attention. 01Try Different Approaches JGI/Jamie Grill / Getty ImagesYou call and call and cal l, and never get the live person (or a call back). Some people just hate phone calls and prefer not to do business that way. Others get a constant flow of phone calls all day and are tough to catch between calls. For both of these types of decision makers, the answer is to try reaching them via another channel. Usually, the most effective second choice is email. Type up a quick refresher on your previous conversation and/or the last voicemail message you left, include a benefit or two to motivate the decision maker, and inform him of the time and date youll next be calling him back.02Enlist Inside HelpIf youre talking to a gatekeeper every time you call, youre in luck. Why? Because you cant talk the voicemail robot into helping you out, but with a human being youve got a pretty good chance. The first time you talk with a gatekeeper jot down his or her anthroponym and hang onto it. When you call back and get the same person, greet her by name shell be flattered that you remembered h er. Simple courtesy is often enough to get her on your side and actively helping you to reach the decision maker. If she does help you to finally get an appointment with the decision maker, be sure to send her a thank-you note or even a small gift such as a box of candy.03Enlist Outside HelpThe Internet can provide an amazing amount of information about the average personif you know where to look. If your decision maker is a business owner or executive, try LinkedIn. With luck, someone you know will be listed as one of his contacts and you can ask that mutual acquaintance for an introduction. If youre selling to a consumer, try Facebook or other social media sites. If all else fails, reach out to members of your network who might know the decision maker.04Arrive In PersonWhen other contact attempts fail, leave a message informing the decision maker that youll be in the area at a certain time and will stop by their office to say hello. With luck, youll be able to catch them in person and give a quick presentation. If the decision maker is unavailable you can at least leave your card and perhaps a brochure or two.05Use *67The next time you call that elusive decision maker, press *67 before you dial her number. This will block your phone number from appearing on her caller ID. WARNING Check your state and local telemarketing regulations before attempting this little trick. In some areas, its illegal for telemarketers to call from a blocked number.
